I don't quite follow how it works. Does it basically behave like a spacer that prevents blade folding, but loose enough to allow lead/lag?

Yes exactly, the BladeBlockerV3 prevents the blades from collapsing, I have 1mm of play, so the blade can move a bit so that it can align itself. So you only need to screw the blades lightly and align them perfectly.
